Minn Kota Weedless Wedge Vs. Weedless Wedge 2: Which Should I Choose?

minn kota weedless wedge vs weedless wedge 2

Minn Kota offers many different propellers compatible with several different trolling motor models. If you’re looking for a new prop, you’ve probably heard about the Weedless Wedge and the Weedless Wedge 2.

What is unique about each propeller? What are the differences between them? Which one is the better prop? And most importantly, which prop is compatible with which Minn Kota trolling motor models?

Let’s find out, shall we?

What is the Weedless Wedge?

Minn Kota MKP-6 Weedless Wedge Trolling Motor Replacement Prop

The Weedless Wedge is a propeller designed to resist getting tangled up in underwater vegetation. It has two opposite blades shaped similarly to a dorsal fin. They are angled so that they push away the weeds and plants that would normally get wrapped around the prop.

The Weedless Wedge is advertised as a “100% weedless prop” on Minn Kota’s website. Its ability to push away the weeds has the added benefit of conserving battery power, as the prop doesn’t have to fight so hard to keep spinning while entangled with plants.

What is the Weedless Wedge 2?

The Weedless Wedge 2, as you might imagine, is an updated version of the Weedless Wedge. It is designed to do the same thing as the Weedless Wedge, but many users claim that design updates have made the Weedless Wedge 2 much more effective.

The Weedless Wedge 2 has two opposite blades, much like the Weedless Wedge. However, the blades on the Weedless Wedge 2 are slightly more rounded and turned up at the tips. This unique design “wedges” the weeds away from the motorhead, preventing entanglement.

Differences Between the Weedless Wedge and the Weedless Wedge 2

As you can tell from the sections above, the Weedless Wedge and the Weedless Wedge 2 are quite similar to each other. But, aside from one being an updated version of the other, there are some obvious differences that help to set these props apart.

What are those differences? Let’s find out!

1. Blade Shape

Trolling motor propeller

As mentioned above, the Weedless Wedge and the Weedless Wedge 2 don’t have the exact same shape. Their blades are slightly different.

On the Weedless Wedge, the blades are smooth, flat, and shaped like dorsal fins. On the Weedless Wedge 2, the blades are more rounded and the tips are turned up.

The blade shape makes the Weedless Wedge 2 more effective at pushing through thick underwater vegetation.

2. Saltwater Capabilities

The four Weedless Wedge models are mostly used for freshwater trolling motors. The Weedless Wedge is compatible with a couple of saltwater models, but it is mostly used for freshwater boating.

The Weedless Wedge 2, on the other hand, is used on a much wider variety of Minn Kota trolling motors, including both freshwater and saltwater models.

So, while both props are technically capable of handling saltwater, the Weedless Wedge 2 has a much wider saltwater application.

3. Compatibility

Changing out your Trolling Motor Prop.

There are four models of the Weedless Wedge as opposed to only three models of the Weedless Wedge 2. That said, the Weedless Wedge 2 is compatible with more trolling motors than the Weedless Wedge.

Since these props are not universal, it’s important to know which one is compatible with your trolling motor before purchasing a new prop. Depending on which particular model you have, it’s possible that both props will be compatible with your trolling motor.

This could lead to another question:

Which Prop is Better?

to buy the Weedless Wedge or the Weedless Wedge 2

If you’re looking for a new prop, and both the Weedless Wedge and the Weedless Wedge 2 are compatible with your trolling motor, you may be wondering which prop you should buy. Which one is better for your particular fishing habits and water conditions?

A lot of boaters and anglers who have experience with both props prefer the Weedless Wedge 2. As mentioned, this prop is designed to be even more effective at keeping the weeds away than the original Weedless Wedge, and it seems to work as well as intended.

The Weedless Wedge 2 is generally a little more expensive than the Weedless Wedge, depending on which model you purchase. That said, the price difference isn’t significant.
